Last weekend, in conjunction with the Cube Development Team, matches were organized in Belgrade and Subotica, Serbia between the Cube Development Team, SKHL Red Star and HK Spartak. During the three-day event, young hockey players from different countries had the opportunity to play three competitive games, but more importantly players got to meet, befriend and share hockey knowledge.
The Cube Development Team is a select team from Chicago, made up of the players from America, Canada, Slovakia and Serbia. The Cube team competes in the North American ORHL League, which is unique in that it allows foreign players to participate as well. The first appearance of the Cube Development Team was in London, Canada, in September, when players from the Red Star and NS Stars were performing for the team.
At the following tournament in Toronto, the team was reinforced by the boys from Slovakia, and then while on a tour in Serbia, the team came to completion with players from all four countries- America, Canada, Slovakia and Serbia.
The entire project is sponsored by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union), which is the oldest nonprofit, volunteer based, sports organization in America, with over 700,000 registered athletes in 42 different sports. In line with the AAU mission of ‘Sports for All, Forever,’ the international players are also allowed to perform in North American leagues.
The next step in the collaboration between the Cube team and the Serbian hockey players will be in February, when they will have the opportunity to spend 15 days in Chicago, during which they will train with the hosts, and will also attend American school.
We owe a great deal of gratitude for the realization of this project to Mr. Thomas Creal and his son Tommy, who in addition to their great effort, also invested their financial resources to make this project a reality.
